Client Spotlight: Alex Jeffrey

For Alex Jeffrey, staying active isn’t just about fitness—it’s about being present and engaged for his three young children. Encouraged by his family doctor to incorporate resistance training into his routine, Alex turned to LEVEL in October 2022, seeking a sustainable way to build strength, improve mobility, and keep up with the demands of fatherhood. Training with Coach Phil, Alex has found more than just a workout programme—he’s discovered a supportive community that prioritises health, balance, and long-term well-being.
What physical activities or exercises were you doing before starting personal training at LEVEL?
I was mainly running – 5k 2-3 times a week, with the occasional ashtanga yoga.
What inspired you to start personal training at this stage of your life?
My family doctor encouraged me to do more resistance training as I got older for health and wellbeing. I also read about it in books like Outlive (Peter Attia) and Younger Next Year (Chris Crowley) – I highly recommend both!
What were your main goals when you started personal training? Were they focused on improving strength, mobility, balance, or something else?
I have three young kids aged 10, 8, and 5, and I’m a bit older than average for a dad at their stage. I wanted to be mobile and flexible enough to run along to keep up with them, help them get ready, and squat down to be at their eye level when I came home to greet them. I want to be around and healthy for them for as long as possible.
What does a typical personal training session with your coach look like? Are there specific exercises you enjoy or find particularly beneficial?
We usually start with stretching and then do around 6-9 different strength exercises – up to four sets of 8-10 reps. I like challenging myself and beating my PBs on deadlifts, zercher squats, and bench presses. I usually do 20 minutes of cardio – assault bike or erg row – at the end of the session.
What changes have you noticed since starting personal training at LEVEL? Are there improvements in your strength, mobility, balance, energy levels, or overall quality of life?
I feel a lot more flexible and mobile. I’m less lethargic and much happier to run up and down the stairs after the kids and play board games with them on the floor at home!
How does personal training at LEVEL differ from other fitness programs or gyms you may have tried before?
I find it a really friendly and welcoming place. I had a look at some of the transformation-type gyms around the CBD but found them a bit over the top and quite intimidating. LEVEL is just a normal, friendly, relaxing environment with no pressure where you can just be yourself.
Would you recommend personal training at LEVEL to others, especially those in your age group? If so, what would you say to encourage them?
Yes, it’s a great place – the trainers are really adaptable and know how to design programmes for your needs. All the staff are really friendly and welcoming, and the space is well-organised, clean, and fully equipped. The emphasis is on free weights as opposed to machines, which I find more natural and effective.
How has staying active and training improved your mental and emotional well-being?
Massively. I generally feel a lot more energetic and positive about life. I have a stressful job that involves a lot of travelling, and I find I can cope with the mental and physical pressure if my body is in better shape.
What advice would you give to others who feel hesitant or intimidated about starting a fitness programme or lifting weights?
I can identify with that. I didn’t want to do it at first as I felt intimidated, didn’t know how to use the machines, how much weight to lift, and was worried about getting injured. I think it’s good to mix cardio, stretching, and resistance training and also not to forget to rest in between. LEVEL trainers understand all this and can help you through this journey to build your confidence.
Can you share a testimonial or any words of appreciation for your trainer?
I train with Phil. I’ve known him for around 15 years, and we’ve trained together for the past three years or so. He is a great guy who fully understands my objectives and limitations – and he doesn’t complain when I’m late (virtually always!). He’s brilliant, I can’t recommend him highly enough.
