Bernadette Bong (age 65): “I train so I can improve my physique and get stronger”

Bernadette has always maintained a healthy lifestyle. In the past, she would engage in various forms of exercise, from dance workouts like Zumba to targeted routines like Pilates in order to tone and stretch and to improve her mobility and balance. She also made sure to include regular walks in her fitness regimen. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, she would participate in online programmes like ActiveSg Seniors on Zoom.

This year, Bernadette decided that she would benefit from professional guidance, and began to train with Manuel, a personal trainer at Level, who also happened to be her son. She knew that with a trainer, she could better measure her progress and stay accountable. Moreover, the presence of a trainer would eliminate any excuses and provide the necessary encouragement and focus.

“It’s better to have guidance when working out so we can see and measure progress. Besides, with a trainer, I don’t find excuses to slack off and get lazy.”

For the first time in her life, Bernadette committed to a regular training schedule with her son Manuel. She set her fitness goals high, aiming to improve her overall strength, cardiovascular fitness as well as body composition.

“My goal with personal training is to improve my overall strength and achieve good body tone and composition. I wanted to tighten up loose skin and smooth out cellulite, and improve my posture with enhanced core stability and balanced muscle development. I wanted to improve my cardiovascular endurance, and prevent injuries if accidents should occur.

A typical training session with Manuel would begin with a warm-up targeting Bernadette’s weaker body parts. Specific exercises would follow, targeting various muscle groups. As her strength and confidence grew, weights were incrementally increased, and her progress was regularly assessed.

As a result of her training, Bernadette’s physique has improved, with better overall form, excellent posture, and a toned body. Aches and pains in her muscles and joints have diminished, and her balance has improved significantly. It’s not just her physical well-being that has improved; her mental strength and energy levels have also seen a remarkable boost.

“I have noticed that I have a better overall form, better posture and tone of my body has also improved. My joints and muscles don’t ache as before and my balance has improved. I feel stronger and have more energy than before. I look forward to a good workout. As a result of training at Level, I become focused in what I do and determined to reach my goals.”

Training at Level with her son Manuel has not only enhanced Bernadette’s physical health but has also enriched their mother-son relationship, a precious gift in today’s busy world.

“Working out at Level helps me to focus on training. I cannot make excuses to miss out on my exercise commitment. Having Manuel as my trainer allows me to see him at work and bond our relationship as son and mum. Nowadays with busy schedules, families lack bonding so I’m grateful that Level has given us this opportunity to do so.”

When asked about training his mom, Manny said

“Helping my mum get fit is a workout in itself. It’s the only training where the real gains are made in laughter, not weights. Jokes aside, she inspires me as a trainer and reminds me why I work in this industry, to allow people to live longer and move better.”

Bernadette’s journey from self-motivated exercise to guided personal training at Level with her son Manuel has been nothing short of inspiring.
