Coach Spotlight: Ileane Ng

Hello, and welcome to LEVEL! Tell us about yourself.

Hi, I’m Ileane, pronounced as Ai-Leen. Take away the ‘e’ at the back and separate the ‘i’ and ‘lean’, and you’ll get it.

I’m a lot friendlier than I look, so don’t be afraid to come and say hi! I’m a people person, but I love animals as well, especially dogs!

How have your years in the fitness industry led you to believe in what you do about fitness today?

I’ve been doing pole dancing for over 10 years and teaching for about 10. It has taught me that the human body is strong and capable, yet fragile simultaneously. I see many injuries and struggles from different people doing a certain movement or pose and always wondered why.

Therefore, I started on my journey as a rehabilitation trainer, to understand the fundamentals of biomechanics of the human body and know why injuries and pains come about. From there, I’ve helped many clients and students understand their bodies better and eventually get out of their pain and become stronger.

Seeing how many people who lead a sedentary life are in a lot of pain, injury and pain prevention is a sought-after solution now. Knowing about strength and conditioning is not enough in the current era of the fitness industry.

What do you like to do outside the gym?

Other than pole dancing, I love to explore different good food and desserts around Singapore! Food is life! I also like studying and reading about rehabilitation skillsets and knowledge as well. Unbelievable, I know, haha. I’m quite a nerd when it comes to things I’m very interested in, and I’ll read a lot about it.

How would you like to chart your journey in the next 3-5 years? What are things you are aiming to do and are striving toward?

Being one of the best rehab trainers in Singapore and ultimately being able to move onto online training clients instead of just face to face, as this can save a lot of time. I’ll be able to travel and still work at the same time!

What do you think are two biggest ways in the way people are miseducated about fitness? Explain!

Social media is so vast and readily available these days, and there are so many clickbait videos that can seem too easy or good to be true. A lot of them will showcase “hacks” or “shortcuts” on how to exercise to lose fat, how to follow certain diets for weight loss, how to use a fast method to get rid of pain in just three sessions, and so on and so forth. Many people will find it convincing and start following that advice without first questioning the source of these “methods” and if there’s any proper research backing up all these so-called “advice.” If it’s that easy, no one will be overweight or unhealthy already.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that many ladies are afraid to hit the gym because they don’t want to get bulky and end up not looking feminine. Honestly, I roll my eyes (on the inside) every time I hear that because it takes a LOT for a woman to be bulky. This is something that women need to be educated about. Having some muscle tone can make them look and feel better!

What are three things people don’t know about you? Elaborate as much as you can if you like!

My hair is naturally curly, which can be annoying in Singapore as it is so humid here. It is frizzy all the time.

My favourite superhero is Batman because he has no real superpowers, but he is a man with intelligence and a good heart (because he doesn’t actually kill people).

I have loved animals since young and have always wanted to be a veterinarian. But I didn’t pursue my dream as the school fees were too expensive and I wasn’t confident that I would do well.
