Meet the latest edition to the trainer team, Wing Yee!

Hello, and welcome to Level! Tell us about yourself.

I’m Wing Yee, I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to organise my life, only to end up cramming my schedule like it’s my last workout. You’ll often find me in activewear because let’s be honest, that’s practically my second skin). At age 32, I’m back to school full time doing my second degree in physiotherapy after hanging up my hospital operations hat. And when I’m not lifting weights or hitting the books, you might catch me indulging in the simple pleasure of eating peanut butter straight out of the jar—because balance is key, right?

How have your years in the fitness industry led you to believe in what you do about fitness today?

I first picked up the barbell at Level, a place that’s more than just a gym—it’s where I learned the art of weightlifting and the perils of ego lifting! Blessed with great, supportive coaches, I quickly learnt that getting the form right is way more important than stacking an extra plate. It’s a lesson in humility and discipline that has stayed with me. To me, it’s really important to find joy in the journey, rather than trying to mimic every trend on TikTok or trying to outdo the person next to you. At the end of day, it’s about building sustainable, meaningful practice that keeps you motivated and engaged.

Let’s talk about rest and recovery, it’s such a hard thing for me even till today. Listening to your body is an art; it tells you when to hit the brakes and when to floor it. I’ve always told my clients that I don’t want them to be my future patients because letting your ego lift the weights is a surefire way to get injured.

What do you like to do outside the gym?

Planning for my next workout/recovery? Hahaha okay aside from that, I love to make lists for everything you can think of. Of late, it’s a list of fish soup places because we’re in a fish soup era now. And I guess that also suggests I love to eat!

How would you like to chart your journey in the next 3-5 years? What are things you are aiming to do and are striving toward?

I’m due to graduate in 2026 so a big part of the next couple of years of my life is probably dedicated to helping people get stronger in the gym and get better in the hospital. (Yes, I probably should think about settling down and popping some babies too?)

What do you think are two biggest ways in the way people are miseducated about fitness? Explain!

1. You always need to lift heavier than you did the previous time. There are many factors that determine how heavy we can and should lift in each session, our sleep, our diet, our life stressors etc. I’ve learnt it the hard way – now I learn to listen to my body and respect what it needs during that training session to prevent a burnout or an injury.

2. Eating too little when they want to build muscles! Admittedly, some days I’ve terrible macros, I don’t eat enough protein and too much sugar and junk food. But essentially, our bodies require protein as building blocks for growth and repair! So if we don’t eat enough (protein in particular), we don’t give our bodies sufficient material for muscle growth to happen.

What are three things people don’t know about you? Elaborate as much as you can if you like!

1. I can’t differentiate left and right in chinese.

2. I got my scuba diving certification last year! Super excited to explore the underwater world.

3. I’ve titanium implants inside both of my feet.
