Coach Spotlight: Erin Ong

Hello, and welcome to Level! Tell us about yourself.

Hello, I’m Erin! I’ve been a fitness, mobility, and yoga coach for 5 years. I enjoy working out and exploring new movements, and I am always inspired and humbled by the strong people around me. Their passion motivates me to become stronger every day. 🤩 I’m also a good listener and enjoy meaningful conversations with people—it helps me connect deeply with my clients and students.

How have your years in the fitness industry led you to believe in what you do about fitness today?

Over the years, I’ve learned that fitness is about doing activities/ movements that make you feel good and prioritizing your own journey without comparing yourself to others. Everyone’s fitness path is unique, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.

Fitness is also about longevity and maintaining a healthy body that allows you to enjoy activities freely and without pain. This is why I’ve been focusing a lot on mobility strength alongside my strength training. I’ve noticed how much it has helped me progress in my training, and I believe starting mobility training earlier can benefit everyone in the long run.

What do you like to do outside the gym?

I started running and hiking this year, and I’ve grown to really enjoy both. I also love exploring new cafes and coffee spots and spending quality time with friends and family. Travelling to Bali to chill has become my favourite tradition, and I plan to make it an annual thing. 😎🏖️👙

How would you like to chart your journey in the next 3-5 years? What are things you are aiming to do and striving toward?

In the next 3-5 years, I aim to expand my reach as a coach, helping more people achieve their fitness goals and empowering them to embrace healthier, fitter lives. Personally, I’m striving to achieve a muscle-up and a stable handstand hold, as well as continuing to compete in running races and as a hybrid athlete. I’m excited to keep challenging myself while inspiring others along the way.

What do you think are the two biggest ways in the way people are miseducated about fitness? Explain!

Fitness is about weight loss or appearance. Fitness should focus on improving functionality, strength, and mobility to enhance overall health and quality of life. Aesthetic goals are just a bonus.

It’s important to cross-train for longevity. Sticking to just one modality can lead to imbalances and limit progress. I used to do only yoga but realised the need to incorporate strength and mobility training to build muscles and joint strength. Maintaining muscle is essential as we age to prevent conditions like osteoarthritis and stay active and pain-free.

What are three things people don’t know about you? Elaborate as much as you can if you like!

I was never athletic or sporty to begin with. In school, I was in choir and acapella and only did some dancing during university. My fitness journey only began in 2014 when I joined the workforce, and it has completely transformed my life. I participated in my first competitive race this year – a 10km run.

I have an identical twin sister! It’s always fun to surprise people with this fact. So don’t be alarmed if you see someone who looks like me but doesn’t recognize you outside—it’s probably not me! 😆

I’m a SUPER bread lover. I can’t go a day without eating bread—it’s my ultimate comfort food! 😋
