Coach Spotlight: Erin’s Run for Cancer

We caught up with Erin, who recently took part in a 100km relay to raise funds for cancer. Invited by a friend to join a 10-person team, she saw it as a meaningful way to support a good cause.
1. What inspired you to participate in the run for cancer?
A friend invited me to join the 100km challenge as part of a 10-person team to raise funds for cancer. I saw it as a meaningful opportunity to run for a good cause, so I decided to participate.
2. Is this something that you usually do? (Participating in events that bring awareness to such causes)
Not really, but I’m glad I had the chance to be involved in this one.
3. How did you prepare for the run physically and mentally?
I’ve been running 10km weekly, so the distance itself wasn’t an issue. My biggest concern was running overnight since I’m not a night person.
4. What kept you motivated during the run?
The energy of the crowd! Seeing so many runners pushing themselves—some even sprinting—motivated me to keep going and run faster. For this relay, I was running 2km at a time, so that distance allowed me to run faster than my usual pace.
5. Do you have a personal connection to cancer, or was there someone in your life who inspired you to run for this cause?
Fortunately, I haven’t had close family members affected by cancer. But this event made me think of my late dad, who passed away from a terminal illness.
6. Would you participate in a similar event again in the future?
I’d definitely consider it!
7. Share a sentiment that you would like others to think about.
Life is unpredictable, and we should never take health for granted. If we can support others in their fight, even in small ways, it can make a difference. The fundraising is still ongoing for eight more days to reach the target of SGD 1,300,000, so if you’d like to contribute and support cancer programs and services, you can donate via this link: https://www.scsrelayforlife.sg/donate!T0162JL.
