Getting Mum and Dad to Train

Getting Mum and Dad to Train:

Convincing our parents to start strength training isn’t always easy—there’s hesitation, fear of injury, and the deeply embedded belief that the gym is a young person’s game.

We spoke to Coach Phil and LEVEL client Erica, both of whom have successfully encouraged their parents to start strength training. Whether it was recovering from health scares or simply improving day-to-day movement, their stories prove that age is no barrier to getting stronger.

Here’s how they did it—and how you might, too.

Coach Phil

What inspired you to encourage your parents to start training, and how did you go about it?

My mum had a stroke, my mum-in-law struggled with osteoarthritis, and my dad, planning for retirement, wanted to stay active. I brought all three to LEVEL for simple strength training and started weekly walks with them at MacRitchie and Windsor parks.

What were some of their initial concerns, and how have things changed since they began training?

They were surprised I offered to train them—my dad was hesitant due to travel, but came around. I taught them basics like deadlifts, farmer’s carries, and rowing. They realised strength training isn’t just for the young; they just needed someone to guide them.

What’s been the most surprising part of their journey, and what advice would you give to others hoping to get their parents started?

I’m proud of how far they’ve come. Mum regained full strength, Dad now walks and trains regularly, and my mum-in-law is moving more than ever.

My advice? Start simple, be patient, and show them they’re capable, at any age.

Erica

What inspired you to encourage your parents to start training, and how did you go about it?

I knew my mum had always been quite strong. However, over the years, I noticed some instability in her gait, which led to further problems. At that point, I was enjoying classes at LEVEL and felt they helped a lot with functional fitness, so I signed her up when I saw that there were senior classes available. She was open to it, but I accompanied her the first few times, as it was still a new environment.

What were some of their initial concerns, and how have things changed since they began training?

I think she was worried about the extent of her mobility and the level of guidance she would receive in class. She has felt very at ease with Phil and Farrah and has surprised herself with what she’s capable of.

What’s been the most surprising part of their journey, and what advice would you give to others hoping to get their parents started?

To me, it’s that she’s happy at the gym and enjoying a better quality of life with increased strength and mobility. She enjoys the company of the other gym-goers and the instructors, and would sign up for sessions herself. For those hoping to get their parents started, consider going with them for a start! The unknown is always a wee bit intimidating, but worries are usually unfounded.
