Helen Chua: “I train so I can improve my mobility”
Biography
Name: Helen Chua
Age: 37
Height: 163cm
Weight: 59kg
Trainer: Coach Wu Chuan Fu
Due to long hours at work, Helen suffered from mobility issues and had difficulty squatting and climbing stairs. She found herself constantly having to seek out physiotherapy and acupuncture therapy. Helen wanted a permanent solution to her mobility issues.
Helen was first introduced to Level during a collaboration between Level and her previous employer, Base Athletica in 2019. While organising the promotion at Level, Helen began to notice the classes at Level and found them intriguing. She decided to give it a try and attended a variety of classes ranging from Sweat, Skill, Spartan Skill, Structure, Calisthenics and Weightlifting.
“I loved the vibe and the instructors”
In 2022, after attending Coach Wu’s Weightlifting Fundamentals class, she decided to sign up for personal training in a group of two with Siah Heng. Siah Heng and Helen were friends from before and Helen introduced Siah Heng to classes at Level. They decided to work with Coach Wu to improve her mobility and this was Helen’s first time working with a personal trainer.
On training with Coach Wu, Helen said,
“I decided to train with Coach Wu because of the way he conducted his classes. He has a very unique way of explaining the exercises, where to focus, how to breathe and how to employ the correct technique when lifting the weights.
He’s also a very fun coach to work with. As a personal trainer, he really listens to your needs and understands what you want to achieve from your training.”
Her goals were straightforward. Helen says
“I wanted to increase my mobility, but also increase in strength and power, and to improve my overall physical fitness.”
A typical session would include warm-up and stretching to prepare the body for squats. Once the warm-up was done, she would practise doing her squats, increasing the weight after each squat. Coach Wu would be watching and correcting her body posture and any incorrect movements.
As a result of her personal training sessions, Helen says,
“I learnt how to use the correct core muscles to execute the exercise. Using my core muscles, I can squat stronger and lift more weight. I also learnt how to breathe properly while executing the squat.”
Before personal training, Helen could only squat with a 10kg bar. Now, she comfortably squats 75kg with good form.
On training with Siah Heng, Helen said,
“Siah Heng is more than 20 years older than me. It’s very motivating and inspiring to see someone in his age group doing what he can do. I want to be able to do what he can do when I am his age.”
When asked if she would recommend Level to a friend or family, Helen says,
“Yes definitely. In fact, I have recommended it to my colleagues and some of them have attended the classes. Level is full of positive vibes, and it is not a competitive environment. The instructors are also very positive. Overall, a healthy environment.”
