Coach Spotlight: Joshua Tan
We got a big influx of new friends recently, so we’ll be introducing them to you one by one over the coming months! Some of them have been here for quite a while and you’ve probably seen them around or even trained with them in class. They’ve all brought a fresh new feel to what we do at Level, and we’re very thankful for them.
Josh joined us at the end of last year, and has since played a bigger role here as our newly minted Logistics Manager. We’ll let the sometimes-stormtrooper tell you more about himself, but on our end, he’s been hitting his targets pretty well.
Hello, and welcome to Level! Tell us about yourself.
I’m Joshua, but everyone calls me Josh. I’m a personal trainer and group class instructor at Level!
How have your years in the fitness industry led you to believe in what you do about fitness today?
I’ve been a coach now for about 10 years, so I strongly believe in the life changing power of exercise. Through my experience, I have learned that sustainable habits are the most essential keys to success. While I enjoy helping my clients build muscle and improve their strength, I also understand the importance of the mobility, rest and good nutrition. Overall, my years in the fitness industry have taught me that promoting a consistent and healthy lifestyle is essential for improving one’s quality of life.
What do you like to do outside the gym?
I spend time with my pug Bruno (I guess we’re talking about him), I also like longboarding, eating and watching Netflix.
How would you like to chart your journey in the next 3-5 years? What are things you are aiming to do and are striving toward?
I’m taking it one step at a time. I’m working towards fiinancial independence and also setting up my own crib.
What do you think are two biggest ways in the way people are miseducated about fitness?
Myth 1: You need to do endless amounts of cardio to lose weight.
While cardio is great for improving cardiovascular health, it’s not the only way to lose weight. Lifting weight can also help by increasing muscle mass in your body, which then in turn boosts your metabolism and helps you burn more calories throughout the day. Additionally, a balanced diet is key to weight loss.
Myth 2: Stretching before exercise prevents injury.
While stretching can be great to increase flexibility and range of motion, it’s not necessarily effective at injury prevention. It’s better to warm up with dynamic movements, such as jogging or jumping jacks to get your blood flowing and your muscles ready for exercise. Do your static stretches after your workout or incorporate them into a separate stretching routine.
What are three things people don’t know about you?
I volunteer occasionally as a stormtrooper in the 501st legion to bring joy to kids and adults alike!
I love tattoos, especially animal tattoos!
I love dad jokes.
