Ng Siah Heng (age 59): “I train for a high quality of life in my golden years”
Biography
Name: Ng Siah Heng
Age: 59
Height: 1.73cm
Weight: 75kg
Trainer: Small Group Personal Training with Helen and Coach Wu Chuan Fu

Siah Heng was introduced to Level by Helen, his training partner. Helen brought him to sample a variety of classes at Level (Sweat, Structure and Skill) with different instructors.
“I felt good after each training session. I began to see physical changes, with increased strength and stamina. I had a great time working out and always looked forward to the next session. The instructors were very encouraging and fun”
They eventually began small group personal training with Coach Wu Chuan Fu, focusing on olympic weightlifting. It was Siah Heng’s first time working with a personal trainer.

Siah Heng’s training goals were very clear:
“I want to increase my strength, flexibility and mobility in the lead up to old age. When I am old, I do not want to have to depend on a personal mobility device (PMD) to move around. I want to have a high quality of life during my golden years and to remain independent and healthy.”
He added with a twinkle in his eye,
“Possibly to compete in the Masters Category in weightlifting to represent Level!”

A typical workout session with Coach Wu would include warm up and stretching exercises to prepare the body for the lift. Once the warmup is done, Siah Heng would practise doing the snatch and clean and jerk in stages, followed by using the full range of motion. Coach Wu would watch and correct his body posture or any incorrect movements.
“One of my greatest improvements is in squatting. Before training at Level, I could hardly do a squat. Now, I can do a full squat with a decent weight. My strength and my power has increased.”
Besides increasing his strength, Siah Heng has also learnt how to engage the right muscles for the right purpose.
“I have also seen improvement in my ability to use my core muscles effectively. I have learnt about breathing techniques and how to use the core effectively.”

Siah Heng has not only seen an improvement in his strength, he has also seen a reduction in his aches and pains.
“Since training at Level, I have not needed to see my physiotherapist or go for any TCM treatments. My pains, aches and stiffness have all disappeared.”

On whether he would recommend Level to a friend or family, Siah Heng says,
“I would definitely recommend Level. The benefits of exercise is awesome. The instructors at Level are friendly and have a good eye for detail. The environment also has positive vibes.”
