Coach Spotlight: Sam

Hello, and welcome to LEVEL! Tell us about yourself.
Hello, I’m Sam! I’m 26 years old this year, and I’ve been working in the fitness industry for over three years. Growing up, I had an active lifestyle, starting with swimming and gymnastics when I was four years old, before taking on a triathlon when I was 9. I transitioned to hybrid fitness (running & gym) about five years ago and never looked back!
How have your years in the fitness industry led you to believe in what you do about fitness today?
I strongly believe in the need for individualisation and flexibility in both a training plan and cycle. After spending a significant amount of time in the fitness industry, this further reinforced my beliefs after seeing countless “cookie-cutter” plans and templates that many blindly followed without understanding what or why they were doing the exercises and how to periodise their training.
Instead, fitness levels, lifestyle, work habits and many other factors should be considered when creating a plan. Adjustments should also be considered and adapted to sudden changes in schedule and how the client feels. Only then will the trainer be able to ensure that the client maximises their route towards their goals while minimising injury risk.
What do you like to do outside the gym?
I like running as much as I do gymming! I spend roughly the same amount of time running as I do gymming. I think this combination helps break the monotony of training while keeping me fit holistically. I also enjoy many sports, and I recently picked up pickleball as my latest hobby. I enjoy spending time with my loved ones, hanging out or doing activities together!
How would you like to chart your journey in the next 3-5 years? What are things you are aiming to do and are striving toward?
I have big goals I’m working towards in the next few years, with some plans spanning into the next ten years. In the meantime, I’d like to improve my skills and knowledge further through more classes, sessions, and courses. I’m also working towards expanding my services online so that I can make a difference in people’s lives outside of Singapore!
What do you think are two biggest ways in the way people are miseducated about fitness? Explain!
1. How people define the term ‘functional training’. Many assume that traditional lifts such as squats, deadlifts and bench presses are not considered functional. However, this term varies widely- The functionality of each exercise is highly dependent on the demands of the sport/activity that one is training for. That said, one should always have a solid foundation of strength that can be built upon before starting on activity/sports-specific movements.
2. The idea that certain ‘shortcut’ exercises will get one towards their goals. Many look for the ‘best’ exercise and fail to realise that discipline and consistency are the fastest way towards their goals. The most optimal exercises and plans will only work if they are followed consistently through an extended period.
What are three things people don’t know about you? Elaborate as much as you can if you like!
1. Contrary to popular belief, my daily meals aren’t as disciplined as people might think! I never do meal preps. Instead, I try to opt for slightly higher protein meals. I still go for fried and oily food, but I make sure it’s not too often!
2. I have a HUGE running shoe collection, so much so that many of my Instagram followers thought I was running an online shoe shop. Yes, I know I only have a pair of feet. I’m crazy about the latest releases and technology and am always looking for the next big news. Because of my many pairs of shoes, I rarely wear the same shoe model twice within the same week!
3. I’m obsessed with perfume! I have a huge collection at home and always gravitate towards perfume retailers when I’m out in the malls. I don’t have a specific scent profile that I enjoy, but surprisingly enough, some of my favourite scents are marketed towards the female crowd. White florals are 11/10!
