Coach Spotlight: Sam and Erin Prep for Hyrox

by | Jun 28, 2025 | Trainers

We spoke to Coaches Sam and Erin about how they’re preparing for HYROX—the setbacks they’ve faced, what keeps them going, and why they believe consistency beats perfection.

Coach Sam Preps for Hyrox:

1. We understand you recently had an injury and surgery. How did you overcome that setback to prepare for HYROX?

I had spinal surgery in late February, which meant restarting everything from ground zero. The key was patience and trust in the process—I had to rebuild my engine from walking to Zone 2 runs before reintroducing intensity. I structured my training around what I could control, including strength work that didn’t compromise recovery. It’s been incredibly humbling, yet empowering to watch myself come back stronger.

2. What’s the most challenging part of your HYROX prep so far?

The hardest part was managing self-doubt—wondering if I’d ever return to my pre-injury form. It’s easy to chase metrics, but I had to learn to measure progress in a different way. Rebuilding under physical and emotional constraints required a lot of honesty with myself. But every small win—holding threshold pace longer, or moving weight pain-free—meant everything.

3. Do you have any go-to recovery or nutrition tips you’d recommend?

Recovery’s been everything for me—daily red light therapy, spinal decompression, and prioritising sleep made a huge difference. Also, don’t underestimate consistent hydration and magnesium intake.

4. What are you most looking forward to on race day?

Honestly, just stepping back onto the start line feels like a win after months of rehab. I’m excited to test the engine I’ve rebuilt from scratch and feel that familiar hurt in a whole new way. There’s a different kind of pride when you know what it took to get there. And of course, sharing that energy with those who are chasing their own goals is the best part.

5. Do you have any advice for LEVEL clients considering signing up for HYROX in the future?

Don’t wait to feel ‘ready’—build your base and the confidence will follow. HYROX rewards those who consistently show up and do the work, not just the fastest athletes. If you’re curious, join our classes where we focus on building your aerobic capacity.

Coach Erin Preps for Hyrox:

1. How do you prep for HYROX safely and without injuries?

As a mobility and strength coach, injury prevention is an essential part of my HYROX prep. I incorporate mobility work 2–3 times a week, targeting areas such as the hips, ankles, and hamstrings to handle movements like sledge pushes, sleds, and running. Strength training builds the foundation to move better, while mobility keeps my joints healthy. I also listen to my body—if something feels off, I scale or modify instead of pushing through pain.

2. What’s been the most challenging part of your HYROX prep?

The key is to be consistent and learn to listen to your body so you don’t burn out. It’s easy to get caught up trying to do it all—strength training, running, and callisthenics—but knowing when to push and when to pull back is where real progress happens.

3. Do you have any go-to recovery or nutrition tips?

I ensure I get enough protein in every meal, and I have recently started drinking protein shakes to support recovery and maintain muscle mass. 🍗 I also ensure I train mobility every week to stay pain-free and move well. When it comes to running and hybrid training days, staying hydrated is crucial. 💦

4. What are you most looking forward to on race day?

To soak in the vibes and energy of it all—the music, the atmosphere, and the HYROX community. There’s something really powerful about racing alongside people giving their all, which motivates me to give my best too. I’m also excited to race and just have fun with my partner in the Women’s Doubles! 🤗

5. Do you have any advice for LEVEL clients considering signing up for HYROX in the future?

Since 50% of HYROX is running, start by getting comfortable with running regularly. You don’t need to be the fittest version of yourself to sign up—you just need to be consistent. Commit to showing up, train smart, and trust that you’ll keep improving as you go. Try because you’ll never know what you’re capable of! 🙌🏻
